07 Apr Alternative Melbourne Walking Tour
Whether you’re a local or a tourist in Melbourne The Alternative Tour is a great way to experience our city from a completely different angle. The tour will lead you through the funky neighbourhoods of Fitzroy and Collingwood, and unveil why they are two of Melbournes most popular areas with locals.
The tour begins at the main entrance of The Melbourne Museum in Carlton where your guide will give you an introduction to the tour. Following this, you will then be informed of the history and culture of pre colonial Australia with a focus on the Wurrundjeri who are the original custodians of the land we now call Melbourne.
As the tour wanders through the backstreets and laneways of Fitzroy we will touch back on Aboriginal history and culture as we pass iconic locations.
The Alternative Tour winds its way towards the hip and happening Smith Street in Collingwood with stories of the growing pains for Melbourne as our population explodes. You will also get the opportunity to see incredible street art by some of the worlds most recognised artists and be given an insight into their work and our arts scene in Melbourne.
After a short break you will then explore Collingwood taking in some of its industrial past and its current hipster havens. The second half of the tour features some of Australia’s most recognised street art murals that hold strong cultural importance to the area. We will also pass the studios and galleries where many artists who we mention on the tour create and display their works.
Along the way you will receive enough local insider tips to fill up a years worth of time in Melbourne leaving you with the thought of wanting to extend your stay. The tour concludes in the cultural heart of Fitzroy just off the main street of Brunswick Street. After the tour you guide will point you in the right direction and give you plenty of advise on where to find the best place to go and grab some lunch or a coffee.
The Alternative Tour operates as a public tour on Friday and Saturday at 10am and is bookable through our Bookings page. It is also available for private tour bookings that can be made through our Contacts page.
